Types and shapes of skateboards and boards

When you decide to buy a skateboard, your mind will appear a lot of questions. And one of the most frequent and most important is the purpose of riding or what kind of board or skateboard you need?

It’s not difficult to get lost here because this question baffles a beginner. Are there different skateboards? At the dawn of skateboarding, there was no variety of shapes, materials, and types of decks, but nowadays, skateboarding has branched out in several different directions. Here and longboarding, and cruising, etc., etc. And all these directions differ precisely in the” way” of riding.

So, what are the main differences?

The “look” of skateboarding can be mentally divided into four branches – skateboard, longboard, cruiser, and penny. But the forms of docks may be similar or even the same in some “types,” and we will talk about them a little further.

*Please note that it is NECESSARY to glue a skin on any wooden deck regardless of the type or shape! Skin is not required for plastic skateboards.

Types of skateboards:

A skateboard is the most classic type among skateboards (paradoxically) or a stunt skate. It means all the boards you can perform various tricks, rotations, ride in radii, on a plane, or in straight figures.

Most often, these include those boards that have a concave. Concave is the concave parts of the front and back of the soundboard (on the nose and the tail).

A skateboard with a concave is considered a trick. And “skateboarding” itself is considered to be stunt skating. (But many confident riders can perform tricks on decks without concave, but this is rather an indicator of the skill level since it is very difficult to learn tricks on such a board from scratch.)

The forms of boards in stunt skateboarding are very diverse, but their main difference is still the presence of concave. Also, there is a trick longboard, but we’ll talk about it later.

A longboard is a type of board for riding at high speeds on mountain serpentines or trails. Initially, this skating developed even earlier than classic skateboarding, in the 40s – 50s in California. Many surfers switched to asphalt during periods of absence of waves.

The boards for the longboard are longer and wider so that you can safely place both legs on it, squat and bend over, maneuvering on turns. Contrary to popular misconception, a longboard is not a city soundboard, it is too bulky, and its advantage is precisely the ability to gain high speed at a steep exit.

Also, the stunt longboard is currently gaining popularity. The boards for it are also very long, but at the same time, it has concave parts (concaves) that are located differently than on a stunt skateboard. The stunt base of the longboard is mainly based on rotational tricks, shorts, and flips.

SET of MOTORCYCLE PROTECTION! The usual skate for such riding is not suitable.

A cruise ship is a kind of “urban longboard.” Unlike the previously designated long deck, the deck for the cruiser is much smaller and therefore easier to maneuver with them on the streets and in the crowd. The main difference from the stunt boards of the classic type of cruisers is that only the rear part is bent, and the wheelbase is shifted forward. Cruise boards, as a rule, are wide and have the shape of a “fish.”

Despite the differences from the stunt skate. Many riders can perform a certain set of tricks on such boards.

For cruising, riders often assemble kits based on conventional wide stunt skateboards, choosing higher suspensions and wide, soft wheels for them. The main purpose of such kits is too comfortable riding around the city.

Plasterboard (penny board) is a small plastic fish for riding around the city. Thanks to the PENNY Company, plastic boards are often called penny boards.

PENNY board began to develop in Australia and produced a variety of plastic skates – longs, fish, and cruisers. Their most popular model is the Original 22″, which is usually implied when talking about a penny board.

Their most important difference is the material. All plasterboards are made of plastic, and they rarely glue the skin on them. These are not trick boards; all penny boards are designed exclusively for riding around the city. This option is often recommended for beginners or children who have just begun to master riding on the streets.

Besides Pennies, there are many different manufacturers of plastic boards, and they are not inferior in quality at all.

Snow skate is a skateboard for riding on snow in winter. There are several varieties of snow skates, but they are united by two parameters – the lack of fasteners, as on a snowboard, and the shape of a board close to a skate (as a rule, they are very similar to old-school wide decks).

The top of the snow gate has a waterproof rubber coating for a better grip on the feet. You can perform show tricks, U-turns and slide along the railing and edges on such boards.

Forms of boards:

From the variety of types of skateboards, we smoothly move on to the variety of forms of the decks themselves. The form is not the type of riding but rather depends on the rider’s style and convenience.

All stunt decks, in theory, can do tricks, but it is more convenient for someone to ride on wide old-school boards, while others prefer narrow decks of the correct shape and so on.

New School is the most popular form of stunt skateboards, which is considered a classic. This soundboard has a regular oval shape, reminiscent of ice cream (hence their second name – popsicle).

The nose and tail of such a soundboard are turned up. This form is sometimes called popsicle (popsicle). This universal soundboard is suitable for ordinary driving around the city, performing tricks, and riding on the ramp.

This form has many subspecies that are unique for different brands of manufacturers. For example, the Welcome Skateboards company has its shapes line with a squared nose or tail.

Old School is one of the first forms of skateboards that appeared.

Unlike the popsicle, the old-school soundboard has a more oval nose and a wide, blunt tail, as well as slightly forward-shifted suspensions (wheelbase).

It was she who became the progenitor of the now popular form of cruisers – Fish.

Many cruisers and pool boards are made based on old-school skateboards. Such a soundboard is well managed, and many professional skaters choose an old-school form, including stunt skates.

Freestyle is not just a separate form of the board but also a unique style of skating. It is based mainly on rotations and balancing on the back and front wheels of the skateboard, which create a kind of “dance” on the board.

In Freestyle, almost no shapes or radii are used; most tricks are performed on a flat surface. One of the popularizes of this style was Rodney Mullen (Rodney Mullen).

Freestyle decks have almost no concaves and are very narrow themselves, and their wheelbase is more shifted to the center than on modern decks.

Decks for longboards and plasterboards – longboards and plasterboards also have many different shapes, some suitable for tricks, and some only for skating.

Stunt longboards are wider and have concave lines for a more stable performance of tricks.

In addition to all these forms, there are also skateboards with a unique shape. As a rule, these are rare specimens that various brands make of manufacturers. You can also ride them, but such skates are often designed exclusively for driving around the city.

Have a pleasant and productive skating rink for you!
